2) Edwin & Jewel
one hundred years ago in san francisco
before the bridges stretched across the bay
my great aunt and uncle took the ferry
across the water on their wedding day
they had only some food and a blanket
for whatever the weather was in june
with all the love you need if you were nineteen
and wandering on your honeymoon
all the world is rolling
rolling at your feet
everything is simple
simply so complete
so they walked through fields and orchards
and slept in haystacks all along the way
they were making tracks or making fireworks
all the way to bodega bay
watch the moon rise above tamalpais
while the sun slowly slips into the sea
to be in marin in nineteen nine, must have been something fine
and what a way to start your life to be
forty years ago in san francisco
my aunt jewel told this tale to me
in the pale light of the moon i thank her for this tune
and i wonder what she's wondering about me
3) New Mexican Night
the sky is a palette of turquoise
the earth is the color of rust
i am gliding away on a train from lamy
going home from seeing someone i love
the sun slips away on the left side
to a wistful exchange with the night
i am feeling the same as i whisper your name
in this tired new mexican light
the heavens on fire in this starkness
hills are changing hue
the shadows they fuse into the darkness
i wish i could too
but the rails head toward acomita
past towns that are fading from sight
i am feeling as scattered as old sixty-six
which barely appears on the right
all of the sky is a palette of purple
the moon is ascending to height
i drift back in my seat with the hope i might sleep
on this tired new mexican night
4) Speak In Dreams
so i spoke in dreams
you chose to reply
scattered communiques
across the april sky
to believe or to deny
your dreams could so eclipse
some carefully chosen words
that have been set adrift
the image starts to fade
the moon is so sublime
you wonder who you were
when the dream did first arrive
you wonder as you wander
is there something you will keep
as the night rolls into day
and you awaken from your sleep
so i spoke a dream or two
after a fashion so did you
scattered interpretation's
tantalizing blue
the daybreak is for certain
though nothings what it seems
soon will come the light
you'll forget the dream
5) Love Comes Again
whenever you're tired, when your scenery's plain
there is no point to even explain
the driest of days they are followed by rain
in the circle of life love comes again
the timing was ripe for the passion parade
where winter precedes the most lovely display
which blossoms into someone close at hand
it is hard to believe love comes again
out of the blue, out of the sky
out of the past, expecting to fly
the cello did sing and the accordion played
for all of the hearts who have been betrayed
by a paupers belief in the lottery game
may your winnings be just when love comes again
you'll be marking my words when love comes again
6) Snow In Salamanca
the rain in salamanca did drift into the snow
for two weary travelers on a bus so far from home
they held on to each other in this faded coach
while in the distance portugal approached
so slow
winding throught the earthen hills of amber brown
they watched the douro river slowly wrap around
the love that lay there sleeping since they met a week ago
far from salamanca and the lives they used to know
for so long so long
the rain is leaving patterns on the window
the temperature is falling through the day
both of them are just as quickly falling
afraid the other will slip away
love is so demanding, love is so complete
the uncertainty of trying, the scars of your defeat
snowflakes were appearing in the fading light
and the snow in salamanca had just started for the night
sweet dreams sweet dreams
7) Irish Hills
my longing's been laid like a pile of papers
that are well read and baked in the sun
before they catch fire and i spill my heart
let me wander my way home
in these irish hills there are valleys and fields
where you first came into view
for that look in your face makes it hard to erase
all these things i've been wondering about you
the last decade's been laid like the wreck of a train
that nobody bothered to find
there's cars and there's track rusting out back
and they can stay there for a long long time
they can stay there for the longest time
if the stars were divided by number
lives were divided by rules
then nature is nothing but wonder
and love is the provence of fools
but when the sun's sinking low in these irish hills
all the light is an exquisite view
and your flaming red hair and that look of beware
well that is another thing too
in the green irish hills where the reservoir spills
like a poem that rolls to the sea
for a while back there i was walking on air
in the moment of how it might be
8) Gabriella
gabriella sat next to me as the train rolled through the dark
somewhere in northern portugal
i was looking for a moment when a flame comes from a spark
to try and fill a longing in my soul
where my mind will wander when it's lonely
i'll think of you one darken night
i'll lie there and dream about you only
till the morning sun come streaming through the blinds
so we headed east across the pyrenees
and climbed the alps into northern italy
the way she spoke my name, the closeness we exchanged
there not things you'd forget easily
we were changing trains and she somehow disappeared
along the lucca railway line
and if she just got lost or lost interest in my cause
that is something i've yet to define
gabriella sat next to me as the train rolled through the dark
somewhere in northern portugal
9) Stars Above The Rhone
stars above the rhone, they linger in the mist
of some little town in the south of france
and beginning with the first darkness overhead
they bring comfort to the lost, they warm the lovers' bed
two wandering souls collided and they fell
they mystifed the sky, they mystified themselves
and taking their cue from a painting widely known
they got lost in the stars above the rhone
gorgeous flaming stars embered all night long
catch them while you can, they'll be gone with the dawn
leaving one to hope, one to carry on
for love comes on its own and it travels when its done
i wish you well, you be safe from harm
and that you'd think of me and the little we've known
so when your evening sky makes its way back home
you take a thoughtful look to the stars above the rhone
10) Navidad In Mexico
navidad in mexico december twenty four
we arrive from san francisco on the day before
flying through the morn on a silver plane
to celebrate a birthday and a new year to begin
the fullest moon in forty years to arrive upon the day
will be climbing in the east out across the bay
this should give you pause regardless of belief
to watch it light the sky on this christmas eve
navidad in mexico diciembre twenty five
the children open presents with the joy to be alive
run along the beach where the waves darken the sand
on the holiest of days in this sacred land
the moon pulls on the tide where the sea will meet the land
we are here today with our fellow man
to watch the world just turn ever since our birth
and hope it will remain past our time on earth
for it's navidad in ireland, france and the middle east
one day above the others where the world should live in peace
the afternoon is closing as the sun slips out of sight
it is navidad in mexico there will be music here tonight
